Google Maps Platform empowers developers like you to build helpful experiences powered by information about more than 250 million places across over 250 countries and territories. But even with all that information, one key factor can dramatically change an experience—the weather. That's why we’re announcing the Public Preview of the Weather API. This API brings reliable, up-to-date weather data directly to developers.
Now, you can easily integrate weather data points like temperature, precipitation, wind speed, UV index, and more into your application. You can also provide users with a richer understanding of their surroundings which is becoming increasingly important as the impacts of climate change escalate. By combining the Weather API with our Solar, Air Quality, and Pollen APIs, you can create even more informative experiences. For example, you could show travelers predicted temperature, precipitation, air quality, and pollen levels or provide auto controls for passengers based on pollution level, precipitation, or extreme weather.
The Weather API uses trusted sources and a proprietary algorithm to provide:
-
Current conditions: Real-time insights into what's happening right now
-
Hourly forecasts: Up to 240 hours into the future, helping users plan ahead
-
Daily forecasts: A 10-day outlook for longer-term planning
-
24-hour history: Understanding recent weather patterns
This data is refreshed every 15-30 minutes and continuously monitored for accuracy, ensuring you're delivering reliable information when it matters most.
With Environment APIs from Google Maps Platform we no longer need to ask the customer to guess the air quality or weather in their area, so the quality of the data is much better, which is adding a whole new dimension to our skin assessment service. There are so many products available, and people want help to find the right ones for them. The more we know about a consumer, the better our recommendations. The richer the insights, the more personalized the treatment. Head of Tech Innovation, Augmented Beauty, L’Oreal Groupe
The Weather API opens up a world of new possibilities:
-
Transportation and logistics companies can optimize routes and delivery times based on real-time weather conditions.
-
Passengers can see weather along routes and receive weather alerts to improve in-car experiences.
-
Retailers can deliver targeted offers and ads based on local weather.
-
Travel companies can help users better plan their days based on forecasts.
And the future looks even brighter. We're excited to use Google AI (beginning June 2025) to advance weather capabilities to deliver a new era of predictive weather solutions. Deliver more helpful and engaging user experiences by seamlessly integrating the Weather API into your applications.
